About CircusWest

CircusWest was founded in 1984, in south Vancouver, as a small, non-profit circus school in a gym. Inspired by circus performances at the Vancouver Children’s Festival, this school was called the Vancouver Children’s Circus Society and it thrived. It filled a niche in the Vancouver circus community, and it grew. Having outgrown its little gym, it moved in 2003 to the PNE Garden Auditorium at Hastings Park in East Vancouver, and subsequently changed its name, becoming the CircusWest Performing Arts Society. This now reflects a much wider and more comprehensive organizational mandate that continues to grow, frequently offering new classes; expanding our community presence with workshops, outreach opportunities, and performances; constantly updating what we teach and how we teach it to better address our students’ needs. The story isn’t over yet. Stay tuned for the further adventures of CircusWest or, better yet, come be a part of them!

PROGRAM NOTES

The setting is a fantastical forest on the edge of the ocean. It is a land where all manner of fish, birds and beasts live in delicate balance, be they predator or prey. When a forest fire threatens their habitat, the hummingbird, the salmon, the bear, the eagle and the mountain lion must all work together to save their home. Through this performance, we realize that things may seem difficult, but if we work together, we can get through it and make our world a better place.

CircusWest was inspired by a hummingbird parable originating with South American Quechuan people. CircusWest adapted it to the BC Great Bear Rainforest and infused the story with circus, dance, and aerial artistry. The story has inspired many to take action to protect the environment and the necessity for community to protect their habitat.

Under the direction of Otto Tausk, Andrew Crust and Vern Griffiths, the members of the VSO provide the musical backdrop for five circus performers, each representing a different creature. You will witness a dazzling array of aerial acts on straps, rings, and trapeze, as well as balancing acts, contortionists, and feats of great strength and athleticism.

The enchanting music includes highlights from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a Bach Suite for solo cello, a Polka from the pen of William Walton, an Allegretto from Beethoven’s 7th symphony, plus family-friendly compositions by Shostakovich, Pärt, Jessie Montgomery, Marjan Mozetich, and the VSO members Marcus Goddard and Vern Griffiths.

Theconcerthall.ca is presented by Telus, Premiere Education Partner of the VSO.

The sponsor of the VSO’s Kids Concerts is OriginO Organic Farms.
